What is Skin Cancer/Growth Surgery?
Several techniques exist to remove skin cancer and growths surgically from the skin. Advances in these techniques improve not only your appearance but also your health.
The type of surgery used depends on the type and location of the mass or growth. Although part of skin cancer is visible on the skin surface, it can also extend underneath the surface. After intravenous, local or general anesthetic is administered, the surgery may require either the excision or Mohs techniques:
- Excision involves a simple surgical process that removes the entire growth using surgical tools.
- Mohs surgery is a specialized technique that may be necessary if the skin cancer cells are spread to a large area under the surface and have no defined borders. The cancer or growth is removed, and samples of the skin are continuously removed and studied under a microscope until the samples show no cancer cells.
For growths or cancers that cover a large area, skin flaps can be surgically grafted from other areas of the body to reconstruct the area. These options and which course of treatment has the most benefit for you will be discussed during your consultation with our medical team.
What is Recovery Like?
The duration and extent of healing depend on the type of surgery and the size of the treated area. Areas where incisions were made will be sealed with sutures, and these areas may be sore, red and drain small amounts of fluids after surgery.
Post-surgical swelling, bruising, and discomfort will continually subside, and your results will be monitored by our medical team. Aftercare instructions for your incision sites will be given to you, and the amount of time you should take off of work to recover will vary depending on the procedure.
At Metro Dermatology, our techniques are results-oriented and backed by evidence and research. We have a patient-first approach, ensuring that our treatments are safe and the most effective method for your individual needs.
