What are IPL and Pulsed Dye Laser Treatments?

Continued studies of the benefits of laser therapies have shown that the long-term benefits and minimal downtime make this technology one of the safest for skin resurfacing and treatment.

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, lasers emit strong, controlled pulses of light deep into the skin. Also known as photofacial or photorejuvenation, IPL laser treatment can stimulate collagen and blood vessels below the skin surface to constrict, tightening skin and reducing unwanted discoloration. In this treatment, we use the eCO2 laser from Lutronic.

Pulsed Dye Laser treatments use a concentrated beam of light and target blood vessels in treated areas. The light is converted into heat, destroying the affected vessels and leaving surrounding skin and tissues undamaged. We use the V-beam in this form of laser treatment.

What Do IPL and Pulsed Dye Lasers Treat?

While these laser therapies are heralded for their ability to treat sun damage, Rosacea, and hyperpigmentation, at Metro Dermatology we also utilize these innovative therapies for other skin conditions as well:

  • Port Wine Stain – Characterized by areas that are pink-red at birth and become darker red and purple into adulthood, this birthmark is caused by blood vessels that did not grow normally in the womb and can cover either small or large areas of the body.
  • Hemangioma – This birthmark is also caused by blood vessels that grew abnormally in utero, but hemangiomas are raised from the skin and appear as blue, red, or purple nodules. While some grow only on the skin surface, others can extend deeper into the body.
  • Telangiectasia – A skin condition caused by dilated capillaries, telangiectasia appear as small red or purple spider veins on the skin surface.

By stimulating damaged blood vessels underneath the skin without irritating surrounding tissues, both IPL and Pulsed Dye Laser treatments reduce the appearance of these skin conditions without extensive downtime.

Slight redness in the treated areas is common after treatment and should subside within a few days. After your consultation with our medical team, a treatment plan will be customized for you to determine how many sessions you will need for maximum results.
