What are Warts?
Warts are noncancerous growths that can develop on nearly any area of the body. They are often flesh-colored and roughly textured, but they can also be dark and smooth in appearance. Because these warts spread through skin to skin contact, they most commonly develop on areas of the body where the skin is broken, including around the fingers, around the nails, and on the backs of the hands.
While warts are harmless, many people choose to have them removed for reasons of comfort or aesthetic appearance. At Metro Dermatology, we provide patients with the treatment and information they need to both eliminate unwanted warts and prevent their development in the future.
What Causes Warts?
Warts are caused by an infection on the top layer of the skin. These infections occur when a virus enters into the skin, usually through tiny cuts or cracks in its surface, and causes the rapid growth of cells in its outermost layer.
The best way to prevent yourself from developing warts is to cover any cuts on the hands and fingers with band-aids. Washing your hands frequently and thoroughly can also help to avoid transmission of the virus. If you have a wart, it’s important for you to avoid wart to skin contact with anyone else to prevent transmission of the virus to others.
How can Metro Dermatology Help?
Even though warts pose no medical harm, all of us at Metro Dermatology understand that many patients want to remove them. Warts can develop on areas that clothing presses against, causing the affected individual a large degree of discomfort. They can also form on highly visible areas, detracting from a person’s aesthetic appearance.
Our practice offers patients access to comprehensive, thorough treatments that can help remove unwanted warts from the body. However, because warts are caused by a virus that can lay dormant in the body, repeated treatments may be necessary to ensure that your warts are removed entirely.
Contact Metro Dermatology to schedule a consultation with our dedicated team of dermatologists and physician assistants. We look forward to hearing from you, and helping you address your skin care concerns!
