What is Atopic Dermatitis?

Also referred to as eczema, atopic dermatitis most often develops during infancy and childhood. This chronic condition is characterized by the formation of dry, red, itchy plaques on the surface of the skin. The severity of these flare-ups can vary from patient to patient, and may affect several different areas of the body, including the:

  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Neck
  • Ankles
  • Wrists

In some cases, the symptoms of atopic dermatitis begin to subside before adulthood. While there is currently no cure available to atopic dermatitis, there are a number of at-home and in-office treatment methods that can help patients manage their symptoms.

What Causes it to Form?

Atopic dermatitis affects the skin’s ability to retain moisture, causing it to become dry, cracked, and easily irritated. This is thought to be the result of a genetic deformity that alters the immune system, as many individuals with a family history of allergies or other immune conditions are more likely to develop this condition. People with relatives who have atopic dermatitis are also more likely to have it.

How can Metro Dermatology Help?

Atopic dermatitis can be stressful to deal with on a day to day basis, but we can help! At Metro Dermatology, our team works closely with each one of our patients to monitor their case and help them track and identify their unique flare-up triggers. Common triggers include:

  • Irritants in soaps, detergents, shampoos, fruit juice, meats, or vegetables
  • Allergens from pets, mold, pollen, dandruff, or dust mites
  • Certain types of bacteria, viruses, and fungi
  • Hot and cold temperatures
  • Stress
  • Hormone fluctuations

We also offer our patients access to topical medications and in-office treatments that can help improve their symptoms. Before administering treatments, a member of our staff of dermatologists and physician assistants will visually examine your skin in order to diagnose your case of atopic dermatitis. Additional tests may be administered to confirm that you have this condition.
