Dyschromia Diagnosis, Causes, and Treatment

Dyschromia is a medical condition that mainly affects hair, nail and skin coloration. A person might notice patchy skin due to hyperpigmentation, which is an indication of dyschromia. This kind of discoloration can cause self-esteem issues, especially when it appears on the face. The good news is that you can overcome this condition by following the guidelines provided by Metro Dermatology.
Dyschromia Symptoms
Dyschromia symptoms manifest on a person’s skin through red or purple patches. The change in skin color is caused by a lack of proper blood flow through the vessels. A person may also experience some pain and difficulty when breathing. Though not common in every patient, some people experience itchiness.
Is Dyschromia Preventable?
There are many types of dyschromia; some are preventable while others aren’t. The best way to prevent this skin condition is by avoiding too much exposure to the sun. If you have to spend a lot of time in the sun, use sunscreen to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays. Always ensure that the kind of sunscreen you use is FDA-approved.
Treatment Options
There are cases where ointments can be used to effectively treat dyschromia, while additional medication might be necessary for others. Skin lightening is used to treat this skin disorder, but this must be done with the help of a qualified medical expert. Other methods of treating dyschromia include:
• Laser therapy – This procedure involves focusing a laser beam on the affected skin to eliminate the patches. The laser’s wavelength must be the same depth as the discoloration to achieve the desired results. The procedure is aimed at enabling collagen repair and regeneration. A few sessions are required for the patches to completely go away. Patients are advised to avoid sunlight for a few weeks to give the skin enough time to heal and regenerate after laser therapy.
• Depigmentation – This procedure involves depigmenting the skin surrounding the patches to create an even skin tone. Although this procedure might seem more complicated than repigmentation, it has proven to be very effective in eliminating skin discoloration.
