Dysport® vs BOTOX® – What’s the Difference?

If you ever wanted to improve the appearance of crow’s feet or other fine lines, then you probably heard of BOTOX®, but you might not have heard of Dysport®. BOTOX® and Dysport® are both solutions to the same problem; however, most people want to know if one is better.

BOTOX® is an injectable solution, and it relaxes the muscles that are known for causing crow’s feet or wrinkles. The wrinkles that most people want to get rid of are crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines. The efficiency and safety of BOTOX® is proven because the product has been around for about two decades.

Only six years ago, a competing product was brought to the market, called Dysport®. Marketed by the same company responsible for the Restylane® product family, Dysport® is a new name for a product called Reloxin.

The Differences between Dysport® and BOTOX®

The reason many people have trouble understanding the differences between these products is that they are very similar. Some would say it is almost like comparing apples to apples. The differences between the products are so slight and easy to miss. BOTOX® and Dysport® have different properties, which provide several advantages to a trained professional.

Both products are used to obtain the same positive results, but the differences between the products make one product better for certain situations than the other and vice versa.

What Makes The Products Different From Each Other?

When compared with BOTOX®, Dysport® might not last as long. This is also called the duration of efficiency. However, this is not a fact, and the duration of efficiency of both products is still being debated. Dysport® is known to have a slightly faster onset of two to five days. The onset of BOTOX® can be anywhere from four to seven days. Dysport® diffuses more than BOTOX®, which means it spreads to a wider area.

When used for certain areas of the face, the greater level of diffusion offered by Dysport® is beneficial. In other situations, it’s not desirable. In general, you need more Dysport® to achieve the same level of results as BOTOX®.

Which Is Better For Wrinkles?

The chemical variations of BOTOX® and Dysport® are different, but both products work in the same manner. They block nerve signals to facial muscles, which causes the muscles to relax.

A recent study says that Dysport® appears to have an advantage over BOTOX® when a patient is smiling, but the effects of both Dysport® and BOTOX® appear to be the same when muscles are relaxed. Researchers have found that for Dysport® to achieve the same results as BOTOX® the dosage of Dysport® must be about three times as large.

While we are talking about two different products, studies show that the results achieved from both products are the same. There are some slight differences between the products and how they’re used, but the results that you can achieve from either product seem to be equal.

At Metro Dermatology, we offer both BOTOX® and Dysport®. Our highly trained dermatologists and assistants will be able to answer any questions or concerns you might have about either product if you are considering using them. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.
