How to Prepare for Your First Laser Tattoo Removal

As the old saying goes, “Tattoos are a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling.” Well, thanks to Metro Dermatology in the Bronx, your tattoo might not have to be so permanent after all. We are a team of advanced dermatologists that specialize in laser tattoo removal. If you’ve been rethinking your ink lately, but are not sure what to expect when you book your first tattoo removal, here are three quick tips to help you feel as prepared as possible:
1. Know Ahead of Time if You Are a Good Candidate for Tattoo Removal
We can determine this during your initial consultation with our highly trained medical team. Depending on the size and location of the tattoo you wish to remove, your age, your skin tone, and various other factors, we will be able to establish which lasers will be required and how many sessions will be necessary to give you optimum results. Interestingly, the more professional the tattoo, the easier it likely will be to remove. The colors in your tattoo matter too — black is the easiest pigment to treat, whereas color tattoo removal requires lasers specific to each color. At Metro Dermatology, we are more than happy to work with you to customize the treatment that will best suit your specific tattoo removal needs.
2. A Week or so before Your Appointment, Plan Accordingly
When you’ve been given the green light for tattoo removal, it’s time to start preparing your skin. Stay out of the sun and slather on the sunscreen, and continue to apply the SPF religiously after your treatment. Laser tattoo removal can take place over a period of several months, and the less stress on your skin during this time, the better. Now is also as good a time as any to quit smoking cigarettes, which can slow healing time considerably.
3. On the Day of Your Appointment, Just Remember: Comfort Is Key
Wear loose-fitting clothing which will have minimal contact with the area of skin to be treated. Skip the moisturizer, perfume or cosmetics, and make sure the affected area is clean and shaven (if applicable). Finally, make sure you stay hydrated — and don’t forget to eat well either. Not only does properly fueling your body keep you feeling your best during treatment, it also helps reduce the risk of vertigo or feeling lightheaded.
