What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin disorder marked by the formation of red, itchy patches on the skin. The classic symptoms of this condition, patches with loose, silver-colored scales, may also be accompanied by discoloration, pitting, or detachment of the nails. These growths can develop on nearly any area of the body.

While there is no known cure for psoriasis, there are a number of measures that affected individuals can take to lessen the frequency and severity of their flare-ups. Many medical-grade topical, oral, and in-office treatments can also be used to help manage symptoms. At Metro Dermatology, our goal is to help affected patients find the right combination of treatments that control their flare-ups.

What Causes Psoriasis to Develop?

While the exact cause of psoriasis is not known, this condition is linked to problems with the immune system. This condition causes the skin cells to begin to multiply up to 10 times faster than usual. Normally, skin cells cycle at a slow enough rate that old, dead skin cells are able to leave the surface of the skin without building up. Because of the increased rate of cell turnover in individuals with this condition, old skin cells begin to accumulate on the surface of the skin, forming patches of rough, itchy, flaky tissue.

This immune reaction is believed to be caused by genetic factors. If an individual has a genetic predisposition for psoriasis, a number of different events may trigger their outbreaks, including:

  • Skin injury
  • Infection
  • Certain medications
  • HIV
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Hormonal changes

How can Metro Dermatology Help?

Treatment for psoriasis at Metro Dermatology begins with a close physical examination of your symptoms. Because psoriasis manifests itself in the same way that other skin diseases do, additional tests may be needed to confirm your diagnosis.

Once diagnosed with psoriasis, our dedicated team of dermatologists and physician assistants will work closely with you to help you identify some of the most common external triggers for your flare-ups. In most cases, these can include dry, cold weather conditions and certain medications. There is no cure for this condition, but our medical experts can provide you with access to moisturizing lotions, medicated skin care products, and in-office treatments to control your symptoms.

Contact Metro Dermatology today for more information about our psoriasis treatment options, or to schedule a consultation appointment. We look forward to hearing from you!
