What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a disease that can cause loss of color in the skin, hair, or eyes. The extent and rate of this color loss is unpredictable and varies dramatically from person to person. However, this condition typically affects only the skin and becomes apparent by the time the affected individual turns 21.

While this condition is not life-threatening or medically dangerous, it can be embarrassing and difficult to cope with for the individuals who develop it. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatments available at Metro Dermatology that can improve the appearance of color loss and help patients restore their confidence.

What Causes Vitiligo to Form?

The color of the hair, skin, and eyes is determined by a pigment called melanin. Vitiligo occurs when the cells that produce melanin in a particular area of the body begin to die off or cease normal functioning. As these cells stop producing melanin, the affected area begins to lose all of its colors.

While the exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, it is thought to be connected to two factors:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • The presence of autoimmune diseases, including Hashimoto’s disease and alopecia

How can Metro Dermatology Help?

At Metro Dermatology, our dedicated team of dermatologists and physician assistants uses their years of experience to help manage cases of living with vitiligo. Before beginning treatment, patients must schedule a consultation appointment with a member of our medical staff. During this consultation, one of our experts will ask prospective patients about their current state of health and past family medical history. A physical exam will also be conducted. If our specialists cannot identify the source of your discoloration using these methods, additional tests may be administered.

Once a patient has been diagnosed with vitiligo, we will assess their individual case and determine which treatment options work best for their treatment goals and health.

Metro Dermatology is proud to offer comprehensive dermatological care for patients of all skin types, backgrounds, and ethnicities. Our experienced staff members speak a combined total of 11 languages, allowing us to communicate effectively with all of our patients.
