What is Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system starts attacking the patient’s hair follicles. As a result, the patient’s hair falls out. In most cases, the hair falls out in clumps, leaving round and smooth bald patches on the scalp or other parts of the body. In some cases, the hair becomes thin and brittle and breaks off, leaving behind short stubs sometimes called “exclamation point hair.” In rare and severe cases, all of the patient’s hair will fall out.

Alopecia affects both men and women. It is most common in people under 20, but it can affect patients of any age. Thankfully, alopecia areata treatment exists.

How is Alopecia Areata Treated?

There is currently no cure for alopecia areata, but there are treatments that can control it. Topical immunotherapy is a common treatment for patients with the more severe forms of alopecia areata. Inducing an allergic reaction tricks the immune system into focusing on the allergen. The irritated skin becomes red and scaly, and it starts growing hair within months. We may also prescribe oral corticosteroids for severe alopecia areata. The pills help suppress the immune system’s activity and allow the hair to grow back.

Milder forms of alopecia areata may be treated with a variety of injections and ointments. The most common treatment for mild alopecia areata is a series of corticosteroid injections. While the injections cause hair to grow back, they don’t prevent hair loss on another part of the body.
