Phototherapy and Excimer Laser Treatments

While there are several techniques and medications available to treat skin conditions, safer and non-invasive methods are usually preferred to increase comfort and reduce recovery time. At Metro Dermatology, our phototherapy and Excimer laser treatments can help multiple skin conditions without causing further damage or irritation.

Metro Dermatology has convenient locations to serve you in Bronx, Elmhurst, and Flushing, New York and Fort Lee, New Jersey. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

What is Phototherapy?

This innovative technique treats several skin conditions using narrowband UBUVB light therapy, the most beneficial portion of natural sunlight. A special machine is used to deliver the light at various wavelengths, providing several benefits to the skin, such as:

  • Directly reducing the chronic itching associated with many skin conditions
  • Promoting an anti-inflammatory effect on treated areas
  • Increasing Vitamin D production without exposing the vulnerable skin to damaging rays from the sun
  • Evidence suggests that phototherapy also increases the systems that fight bacteria in the skin

At Metro Dermatology, we offer units for the hands and feet as well as whole body treatments.

What is the Excimer Laser?

Excimer lasers emit powerful beams of ultraviolet light to the skin, treating targeted areas without exposing or damaging surrounding healthy skin. The strength of the laser quickly and comfortably clears problematic skin conditions that do not respond to other treatments.

What Do Phototherapy and Excimer Laser Therapy Treat?

These therapies can be used to treat several different skin conditions, including:

  • Psoriasis
  • Vitiligo
  • Atopic Dermatitis
  • Dyshidrosis
  • Pruritus
  • Other skin conditions that are proven to be photoresponsive

Am I a Good Candidate for Phototherapy or Excimer Laser Treatment?

Healthy individuals who have photoresponsive skin conditions that do not respond to topical treatments are often good candidates for these therapies. However, they are not for everyone. Your health, medical history, and other factors will be taken into consideration to determine if these methods are right for you.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Aside from temporary redness akin to a sunburn, no major side effects have been reported for phototherapy or Excimer laser treatment. Protective eyewear is issued during both therapies to eliminate the risk of eye damage, and all other potential risks and complications will be discussed with you prior to treatment.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Although these therapies can create long-term results that do not require daily maintenance, multiple sessions are often necessary for both phototherapy and Excimer laser treatment to achieve desired results.

During your consultation with our medical team, your skin and individual condition will be evaluated to determine the best course of treatment.
