Reasons to Consider Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition in which skin cells reproduce abnormally fast and, thus, cause accumulations of scaly skin on the patient’s body. The condition is believed to be caused by a malfunctioning immune system. There are several types of psoriasis, with plaque psoriasis being by far the most common. About ten to thirty percent of patients develop psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis can also affect the fingernails and toenails. It can cause the nails to become pitted and discolored, and it can even cause them to detach from their beds. If you are struggling with this condition, take heart. You can improve your quality of life with professional psoriasis treatment at our office.

Can Home Remedies Help Psoriasis?

Home remedies, like daily baths or over-the-counter moisturizers, can sometimes make the skin affected by psoriasis look and feel better. Such remedies are especially likely to be useful for people with mild cases of psoriasis.

Psoriasis exists along a continuum ranging from mild to severe. A mild case is defined as one affecting less than three percent of the patient’s skin, with one percent of the skin equaling an area about the size of the patient’s hand. In a moderate case, three to ten percent of the skin is affected. A severe case is defined as one in which over ten percent of the skin is affected.

People with moderate or severe psoriasis should see a qualified medical professional for psoriasis treatment. Generally speaking, patients with mild cases may try home remedies first, but they should contact our office if they don’t see any improvement.
