Say Goodbye to Acne with Photodynamic Therapy

Acne can be an overwhelming problem for people of all ages. Not only can it be physically uncomfortable, but it can also cause great anxiety and self-consciousness in its sufferers. Over-the-counter treatments, and even prescription medicines, are not always successful in treating the problem, especially when breakouts are severe.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a convenient method of acne treatment that delivers quick results. It’s also quite safe and doesn’t come with the complications attached to other remedies. If you are sick and tired of your acne, we encourage you to learn more about how you can say goodbye to your blemishes with photodynamic therapy.

About PDT

Photodynamic therapy uses the combination of a special light, along with a light-activated solution, to destroy the bacteria that causes acne. An added benefit is that it can actually smooth and improve the appearance of existing acne scars in the process.

There are a number of other benefits offered by photodynamic therapy. Along with reducing the actual breakouts and diminishing scars, PDT is also quite rapid in its response to acne because it is able to directly reach the bacteria that are the source of breakouts. There is no additional scarring or surgical incisions involved with this treatment, as with other routes. Unlike antibiotics, you don’t have to worry about system side effects or allergic reactions. PDT is good for your skin. You can anticipate walking away from these treatments with rejuvenated and healthier-looking skin.

What to Expect

For optimal results, patients should expect two to three PDT sessions, with two to three weeks between each treatment. If your acne is severe or stubborn, it’s possible to require up to five treatments.

During the treatment, a special substance is applied to the skin. The substance is activated by the particular wavelength of light used to attack the acne. The solution is allowed to sit on your skin for a certain amount of time. Then a particular light will be used as a catalyst to help the substance do its job.

The type of light used will determine the results. For example, deep cystic acne requires use of a particular red light that pushes the substance to the deeper skin layers. Our doctor will determine a customized treatment plan for you during your consultation.
